„How do I get started?”
This is probably the most common question I receive when I speak to groups about self-improvement. And my answer always is the same: „Just pick up a book and start reading.”
There are hundreds of books written about how to become successful in every field of human endeavor. I love the fact that so many people want to learn about becoming better and more successful. But there’s just one problem with reading too many books:
Overwhelm!
The good news is that there are very few books written about self-improvement. In other words, you have a much greater chance of finding something useful than if you were searching for information on becoming rich, losing weight, starting a business, going to college, dating, parenting or any other subject.
So the first step in self-improvement is to find books specifically designed to help you become a better person. There are thousands out there. Here are a few you may enjoy:
How to Win Friends & Influence People – Dale Carnegie
Think and Grow Rich – Napoleon Hill
The Power of Positive Thinking – Norman Vincent Peale
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People – Stephen Covey
As a writer, I recommend finding a book that speaks to your heart. Anything else is like trying to fix a car with a hammer. It sounds logical, but it doesn’t work very well.
Now that you’re equipped with a list of books, let me give you some advice: Read them!
That’s right. Just read them. Don’t try to apply anything from each book at the same time. Instead, just read. Then, once you finish a book, ask yourself what you learned. How can you put that knowledge into action? If you’re interested in self-improvement, you’ll find many ways.
If you’ve ever been involved with a sports team or group activity, you know how important teamwork is to achieving success. Well, self-improvement is no different. There are several things you can do to help you along the way:
1) Find a mentor. Someone who is already successful in the area you’d like to improve is your best resource. He or she will tell you what worked for him or her.
2) Ask questions. Any good teacher will be happy to share their knowledge with you. Make the most of this chance.
3) Listen to your gut. Most of the time, your instincts are right. If you get a bad feeling about someone, trust your intuition.
4) Surround yourself with successful people. If you want to win, hang out with people who are winning. Get rid of losers and those who discourage you.
5) Believe in yourself. Remember, the only limit to your success is the limits you place on yourself.
6) Do the hard work. No one gets anywhere without working hard.
7) Make a plan. Start with the end result in mind and create a step-by-step action plan for getting there.
8) Have fun! Remember, you aren’t doing this for anyone else but yourself. Enjoy the journey!
